Makers Guild Wales – Makers Guild Wales Gallery at Craft in the Bay – 2nd April to 29th May 2022 – The Last Word
It can be hard to clearly state our real thoughts and feelings, falling over the right and the wrong words.
We want to be seen, but worry about the reactions of others, how we will be viewed, the impact of our words on ourselves and others.
We struggle, rethink, rewrite and finally grasp the moment, risk all, expose ourselves – the words and emotions finally flow together and we hope at last to be understood.
These pieces are made using glass powder to form wafers that are shaped by heat to represent paper sheets. Using this process, I hope to show through the fragility of the glass, both our vulnerability when we try to communicate our feelings, and the strength of impact when we are understood.
Working with glass has led me through a range of wonderful working processes and forms. I love glass powders and frits as they offer me the chance to build from the tiniest particles of glass, beautiful wafer-thin pieces and sometimes more robust forms using the Pate de Verre approach – to me the creative bonding of small particles is a metaphor for the strength and benefit that can be found through individuals and communities making connections.
